So I (31M) work in a mid-sized tech company. A new hire, Jess (28F), recently started and brings a service dog with her every day. It’s a golden retriever, very well-behaved, and she says it helps her manage anxiety and panic attacks. Totally respect that.
Here’s the issue: I’m very allergic to dogs. I’ve had mild allergies my whole life, but since the dog started coming in, I’ve had constant itchy eyes, sneezing, and even hives a few times. I’ve tried taking antihistamines, but I don’t want to be on meds every day just to do my job.
I brought it up with HR, and they offered to move me to another floor. I don’t love that, because I’ve been in this team and this seat for three years. I have all my stuff here. My routine. My window. My plants. I don’t think it’s fair that I should have to change everything because someone else brought an animal into the workplace.
I asked if she could work remotely or only bring the dog in on rough days. She overheard this and got upset, saying that I was “endangering her mental health” and trying to make her feel unwelcome. I said I’m not trying to shame her—I’m just physically affected by the dog’s presence.
Now some coworkers are saying I’m being insensitive and ableist. HR hasn’t made a final call yet, but I’m worried this is going to blow up and people will see me as the bad guy for asking for accommodations too.
AITAH for wanting the dog gone so I can breathe normally at work?
