My grandfather is 95 years old and is extremely proud about still driving and refuses to stop. I’m an EMT, so I’ve been on the scene for car crash injuries, and have been the victim of car accidents 2x in my life.
I pointed out large horizontal scratches on his car’s left side, was probably a sideswipe. He said that was the first time he ever saw those scratches. He has severe macular degeneration in his left eye - he cannot see left turns. He drove right through stop lights. It was scary.
No one in my family wants to do anything about it because he’s stubborn, tired, and prone to lashing out. We tried talking to him about how dangerous his driving is to himself and others and he needs to stop, but he will not listen to a word of it. I didn’t think he’d stop driving voluntarily, so I decided to report him to the state revenue office to request a mandatory eye and driving skills exam.
My whole family is extremely pissed at me and can’t understand why I can’t just let him be and enjoy his final years driving, and I feel like I ruined my relationship with him during his final years.
