I live in a 2 bedroom flat with one of my friends and in the past few months her and her new boyfriend got quite serious and he had been staying over for most nights in the week which I don’t really mind. He’s a nice guy always friendly so no issue there. About a month ago she asked if he could move in fully, that he would pay some rent to make it fair but because he wouldn’t have his own space (room) or his name on the lease or a set of keys it would be less than we pay. That was absolutely fine with me! He started paying £200 a month and we payed £500 each which is all ok to me. Then this month, I went to say hi to them both and my flatmate told me she and her boyfriend had bought a tv for the flat… I don’t really watch tv on an actual tv so didn’t mean much to me I never really wanted one. She said she didn’t expect me to pay for it they just wanted it for the flat. Then today I left my room and went to the lounge and there was a tv there. Yippee? I started a conversation with my flatmate about the tv, and how it was much nicer than I expected, she said that her boyfriend payed for it (like he does for most of her expenses) that’s why it was so nice. Then as I was about to go back to my room she said yh we said (her and her boyfriend) that he could just take it out of what he pays for rent… So basically he is not paying rent this month (normally he pays us both £100 to make up his £200 then we pay the origional amount to the landlord because his name isn’t in the lease). Instead of paying me rent for living in our flat he has bought a tv that I had no say in and wasn’t even consulted about until they had bought it and already told me. I’m kind of pissed off about this. I don’t want a tv, although it’s nice, I don’t need it nor have we ever really talked about getting one. And the fact my flatmate said that I wouldn’t be expected to pay for it because they made the decision without me to buy it. I now kind of am paying for it because he isn’t paying his portion of the rent to me. I know some people will probably dismiss this as he would only send me £100 a month. But I’m a student, and money tight, so that’s money that I want and need. I haven’t said anything to her because I don’t know how to approach the situation. Do any recommendations would be appreciated. But am I the asshole for being angry about this??
