Okay, so I (24M) have been with my girlfriend (22F) for about a year and a half. She’s currently 6 months pregnant with our first child. For the most part, things have been good between us, but lately she’s been really sensitive, which I get, pregnancy hormones and all that.
So the other night, we were chilling on the couch, she had just eaten an entire carne asada fries and half my burrito (not complaining, she’s eating for two), and she leans back, rubs her belly, and says, “Ugh, I feel huge.”
Without thinking, I kinda smirked and said, “You’re starting to look like a whole torta.”
Now, for context, we’re both Mexican, and I’ve always joked around using food nicknames. I’ve called her “tamale,” “pan dulce,” “churro,” etc., and she usually laughs. But this time, she just stared at me, got super quiet, and then went to the bedroom and slammed the door.
I thought she was just messing around at first, but then she started crying and told me I was “body-shaming” her and that I made her feel “disgusting and ugly.” I tried to explain I didn’t mean it in a bad way, tortas are elite! I love tortas! But she wasn’t having it.
Now she barely talks to me, and her mom (who lives with us for now) gave me the dirtiest look this morning and muttered something about me being “inmaduro y tonto.”
So… AITAH? Or was it just a poorly timed joke?
