📝 AITAH for calling out a girl for faking her nationality because EVERYONE was eating it up????

So I (21F) am in uni and there’s this girl (I think same age??) who I have like 4 classes with and we have a bunch of mutuals. Everyone is OBSESSED with her. Like yeah she’s pretty or whatever but it’s lowkey giving cult. I’m a girls’ girl and I support women and all but I genuinely do NOT get what’s so special about her. I’m not a hater I swear, I was actually open to meeting her.

Anyway the other day her TikTok came up in my “people you may know” so I followed her. I was scrolling later and a video popped up of her lip syncing to this Spanish song. I don’t really speak Spanish (I took it for like 2 years in high school and got a B) but it was obvious that the the song was saying something like “Where do all the prettiest girls come from? Well obviously from Costa Rica” or something like that and I was like huh???

Because here’s the thing, this girl is ASIAN. No doubt. I’ve seen her talking to other people on campus in what I’m PRETTY sure is Chinese or whatever. She’s not Latina. She’s not Costa Rican. And I started scrolling through her TikTok and she has a TON of videos speaking in Spanish and talking about Costa Rica like it’s her “home". Girl what??? Why r u cosplaying as an island girl now??? Since when is Costa Rica in Asia???

So I kinda let it go for like a week because maybe I was being judgmental or whatever and then I get invited to dinner by one of our mutuals and guess who’s there. Her. I’m like okay fine I’ll be civil but then in the middle of dinner she starts saying something like “back home in Costa Rica…” and I couldn’t take it anymore. I literally interrupted her and was like “Why are you pretending to be Costa Rican?? You’re literally Asian.”

She looked baffled and was like “??? I’m not pretending? I am Costa Rican?” And I was like NO you’re CHINESE. I’ve HEARD you speak it. She starts giving me this whole story about how she was born and raised in Costa Rica and her parents are immigrants from China and she’s only visited China like once a year. She even pulled out her phone and showed me pictures of her in a random Costa Rican high school with her little uniform and pigtails and everything like okay you planned this.

I got so mad because that doesn’t mean anything?? Just because you lived there doesn’t make you from there. She’s ETHNICALLY Chinese and should stop lying for clout. Like??? And everyone at the table was just awkwardly quiet and I felt like I was in a black mirror episode where everyone is trying to gaslight me. So I left. I didn’t want to be part of her delusion.

But then the next day I was studying in the library and this girl comes up and slams something on the table and it’s a literal Costa Rican passport and she was like “See? I’m Costa Rican. Can you stop saying I’m not?” and walked off like she just won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Now people are saying I’m the asshole??? I don’t get it. Just because she was born there doesn’t mean she’s really Costa Rican. Like I was born in Pennsylvania and all but culturally and ethnically I’m always gonna be Irish and Italian because that’s were my ancestors are from, is it really that hard to understand???
