So I (19F) recently got to know this guy and we hung out 2–3 times. This was maybe the third time, so we aren’t that close. We’re also part of the same group in my lab class in college, so I know him from there. Basically a new casual friend.
We decided to hang out properly for the first time yesterday. He told me about this sport (not disclosing which one) that he bets on online and explained how it works. I was interested, and we watched the match together. One of the bets had a 9x return, like if you bet x amount of money, you get 9x back if you win.
He put in 1 dollar for the bet (a different currency but I’m converting it to dollars). I said I didn’t mind trying it out too, so he bet 0.3 dollars for me. Then I said, you know what, why not just bet more. He asked if I was sure, since we could lose the money. I said I didn’t mind, so he bet 2 dollars in total, 1 for each of us, from his own money. My plan was to give him 1 dollar if we lost, or if we won, he’d just send me 8.
We were watching the match and it was looking like we were going to lose. I made jokes about how I’m not seeing that dollar again, and I guess he felt bad since he was the one who got me into it, so he said I didn’t need to pay.
I obviously declined and laughed awkwardly and said I’d pay him.
Anyway, the match took a turn and the team we bet on started winning. We were both watching eagerly and celebrating every point. The team ended up winning, and he literally hugged me out of excitement.
(I changed it to dollars but 10 dollars is a decent amount in my currency. Like I could easily get a h&m top with that much)
I started joking about how I wanted to call my best friend and tell her I won because I was so excited.
We hung out a bit more, then said bye, and while saying bye I joked, don’t forget my money.
He didn’t pay me the next day and I felt awkward asking. I started wondering if I even had the right to ask or if it would seem desperate. But then I got annoyed and ended up casually texting, “bro where’s my share” because he was still making jokes about the match, so clearly he hadn’t forgotten.
He replied, “what share? Idk what you’re talking about?”
I couldn’t care less to argue over 10 dollars, so I just left it, but it pissed me off enough that I started ignoring his messages and removed him as a friend on Instagram.
I talked to another friend about it, and he said he gets my point but also kinda gets the other guy’s side, since I’m asking for half his win. But the thing is, he wouldn’t have bet that extra dollar if it wasn’t for me. It was pretty clear that the dollar was from my side, and I had already said I’d pay him if we lost. He even asked me if I was sure I wanted to bet, so he knew it was my bet even though he paid it for now. It’s just online so it’s easier for one person to pay upfront. I thought I’d pay him if we lost or he’d give me the profit if we won.
Before this, he made a joke about how if the team won he could’ve just not told me and kept the money since I don’t know much about the game. I laughed but a part of me was wondering if he was actually serious, so I asked if he was joking and whether he had the morals not to do that, and he assured me he was joking.
He’s still been texting me casually since, and I replied a bit, but once I properly thought about the whole bet thing I just didn’t feel like talking to him anymore.
