I (20f) have a friend, let’s call her Jess (21f). we’ve been close since high school, but lately i’ve felt like she’s always competing with me or lowkey putting me down. anyway, it was her birthday last weekend and she invited a bunch of us out to dinner.

I wore a cute pink corset top and jeans - pretty chill but flattering. when i walked in, she said 'omg wow, someone dressed to be the main character huh?' and laughed. Everyone else kind of laughed too, so i just smiled and tried not to take it personally.

But then later at dinner, when i mentioned a work thing i was excited about, she goes, 'we get it, you’re the most successful one here' and when someone complimented my hair, she goes 'yeah she’s always so put together. Must be exhausting.'

Idk it was just constant little jabs like that all night. no one else said anything, but it made me feel really self-conscious and weird, like i wasn’t supposed to be getting any attention on her night.

So i just left early. I said i wasn’t feeling great and dipped before we even made it to the bar. She texted me the next day asking why i 'bailed and made it obvious' i was annoyed. I told her honestly how the comments made me feel and she said i was being sensitive and trying to ruin her birthday with drama.
