So this happened a couple weeks ago on April Fools, and my friends are still giving me crap about it. I thought it was funny, but now I’m wondering if I crossed a line.
I (29F) went out to eat with some friends on April 1st. Our waitress was really nice, very attentive, and honestly did a great job. At the end of the meal, I filled out the receipt and pretended to write a $100 tip. I made a big show of it, like “You deserve this! Enjoy it!” and handed her the receipt.
She looked super shocked and said thank you like three times. After she walked away, I quickly got the receipt back and crossed out the tip, writing “April Fools! No tip for you, dummy” in the tip line. I thought it was hilarious.
When we left, one of my friends stayed behind and actually gave her a $40 tip in cash. Later, they all told me I was being a jerk and that it was cruel. I argued that it was just a joke and April Fools is supposed to be about pranks. It’s not like I insulted her personally or did anything permanent.
But now a couple people have said they don’t want to go out to eat with me anymore if I’m going to “mess with people like that.” I didn’t mean to be mean — I just thought it would be a funny story.
So… AITAH?
