My brother (let's call him Jake) died 8 years before I was born. He was a stillbirth. Growing up, we talked about Jake sometimes and visited his grave, but other than that it was sort of the elephant in the room. As I've become an adult (I'm in my 30s), I sometimes feel like a piece of our family is missing and I wonder about who he would have been.
So when people ask me about my family, I usually say something like "My brother would have been age" grouped in with my other siblings. Recently, my mother has very upset with me for this. She says that Jake is not other people's business and that I need to stop "mentioning him for attention" because I "didn't know him".
AITA for mentioning my deceased brother when people ask about my family?
