I'm part of a group of friends that are all just kind of friends by default (it's a long story but basically I'm not really super close to any of them but they're all very nice and we occasionally do things together) and it was one person's birthday this weekend. I couldn't attend the dinner at a restaurant (truthfully I sat this one out because it was just going to be a little too pricey for me) so I offered to pitch in some money if anyone wanted to go in on a gift together. I guess I could have been more specific and said how much I wanted to pitch in but I was thinking around $20. A few other people hop on board and next thing I know someone suggests a very expensive gift and says everyone's share will be around $60. I didn't get a chance to see any of this get discussed because I was at work and not on my phone but I was very frustrated at how much they were expecting everyone to pitch in. I messaged and said I couldn't pitch in that much and would be contributing $20. Am I the asshole for doing that? I think everyone else just kicked in their assigned share. In my defense, I do not make NEARLY as much as everyone else and I think everyone kind of knows that (I literally probably make 1/4 of their household income).
