So in December me and my girlfriend bought our first house together. When buying the house, I told her that there was a good chance in January work would pick up in a big way, she told me not to worry, understood and if I couldn’t be there as much that she’d understand and that her Dad would be helping out also.

Anyway, January came round and work has certainly picked up. I’m self employed and have taken on a new project which is going to take me up until March 2026. Right now I’m managing to get to the house on weekends and true to her word my girlfriend has been very understanding and forgiving of me being a bit absent with assisting on the renovation side of things… however her father has just been making subtle jibes at me, giving me the cold shoulder and making out that I’m just lazy and bothered in helping out.

It’s really awkward when I go there, and it’s getting to be a frosty atmosphere, my girlfriend has told me not to worry and that it’s just how tradesman/construction workers get (my work is office based)… but it’s just got me doubting myself, if I don’t do this work I can’t afford to pay the mortgage and being late on deadlines will screw me.

Am I a lazy asshole?
