I’m (28M) getting married this summer to my fiancée (27F). We’ve been planning a relatively small wedding (about 70 people) because we’re paying for most of it ourselves. My older sister (32F) has been dating this guy for about 4 months. None of us have met him yet. She’s talked about him a few times, but from what she’s shared, he sounds… complicated. He’s been divorced twice, has three kids he barely sees, and recently lost his job. I’m not judging — life happens — but my fiancée and I agreed that for our wedding, plus-ones should either be long-term partners (like 1+ year) or spouses/fiancés.
When we sent invites, I only put her name. She immediately texted me saying, “Where’s [boyfriend’s name]?” I explained our plus-one rule and said I hope she understands. She blew up, saying that it’s “not fair” and that I’m “excluding her happiness.” She then said she’s not coming unless he’s invited. Our parents are now involved, telling me to “keep the peace” and “just add one more plate.” But honestly, it’s not about money — it’s about the day being for people we truly know and love. I don’t want to meet a random guy for the first time at my wedding, especially when he might cause drama.
Now I’m getting guilt-tripped left and right. AITAH?
