My husband, (30 M) and I, (31F) have been together for about ten years, half of those married. I've been wanting to post about this for a long time. Throw away because some family members I know are regular users of Reddit. We used to rent our house from his grandparents- (not relevant now but will be key detail for later) When we got married, we did not do your "traditional" wedding - as my husbands family is VERY religious and mine is not. I was never one of those girls that dreamed about having a wedding. We eloped and had a small reception at a local hall, and it was great. We paid for what little we did with some help from my family. I never created a wedding registry, our house was small at the time and we pretty much had everything we needed; so most people just gave us money. We recieved mostly cash and a handful of checks. One of them from my husbands grandparents, for $500 - it was made out to my husband only... My husband had a very demanding job at the time and could not make it to the bank during weekday hours, so we had the check for a few weeks. My husband went over to their house for a visit where his grandmother proceeded to scold him for not cashing the check yet. I still don't know why this made her so upset, but my husband explained that getting to the bank after working 70+ hours during the week was obviously difficult. Instead of offering literally any other solution she just said for us to void the check and she would take it off our rent instead. When he came home and told me this, I was abosutely blown away. To me, that was a gift to celebrate our marriage?? Not a "free" month of rent. It's been several years since this happened and I still loathe seeing her at any family events. I've had some people tell me to just get over it because she's old and "that's just how the older generation is" but she's picked on me with some generally rude comments over the years as well. Am I the asshole for not liking her?
