(Throwaway account)
TLDR: My boyfriend wants me to cover my tattoos around his family because they’re conservative. I don’t want to. AITAH?
I’m (25f) meeting my boyfriend’s (25m) family for the first time next week. This includes his grandparents who are pretty conservative - his mother is as well. He said he wants me to wear long sleeves to cover tattoos at least around the grandparents, because he doesn’t want to deal with remarks from them. My tattoos aren’t even anything “offensive”, like one of them literally has a Bible reference from when I was still religious. My boyfriend also has longer hair and a tattoo that shows with short sleeves, so he plans to wear his hair in a bun and wear long sleeves too (just to please them). I told him I would only wear long sleeves if the weather permits. If it’s hot outside I’m not going to suffer just to appease his grandparents. I understand that my boyfriend just wants to avoid conflict, but I can’t help but feel he wants me to be someone I’m not. Like, maybe don’t date someone with tattoos if you care that much about what your family thinks. I just hate feeling controlled, even though he claims he isn’t controlling me. I hate conformity. I hate that some people are so stuck in their ways that they can’t accept someone different than them. Anyways, should I just suck it up and wear long sleeve regardless of how I feel? AITAH?
