I 26F have been with my boyfriend 25M for two years. My birthday is the day before his older sister’s birthday and his older sister just so happens to be engaged to someone who has the same birthday as her

I had been planning my birthday trip for one year. Growing up, I never had a birthday because I grew up a bit poor. My mom had cancer and passed away when I was seven and my dad raised me and my two brothers alone. All I got was a cake as we could not afford a birthday party

I then went off to college and would try to have little cheap get togethers with friends, but this is the first year I have ever been able to splurge on my day and my boyfriend knew this

My boyfriend’s sister got engaged around four months ago and his family thought it would be fun for all of them to go on our first vacation together as a family to celebrate the engagement and to celebrate their birthdays. I was also invited, but I told my boyfriend that I did not want to go

I told him I had planned a trip for the two of us to go to Europe and backpack. He’d even taken off of work for 10 days for this trip and so did I. But he was now wanting me to change my plans around telling me that it would be rude of us to decline when his parents were going to pay for the bulk of the trip

I never asked for that and I feel like me declining isn’t rude. I told my boyfriend that he could go and I would either find a replacement or go alone

He told his family that I was going on my own trip and he must’ve made it seem like I was rude about it because the next time I saw his parents, sister, and brother in law, they seemed a bit cold towards me

I pulled him aside and asked him what he told them and he says that he just told them that I didn’t want to go on the trip because I would rather go to Europe instead, which proved my worries because the wording makes it sound like I’m a rude bitch that declined an almost free trip to go somewhere else, but I had my birthday planned for almost a year at this point
