Friday my husband and I had our weekly menu discussion while making our grocery pickup order. We typically bounce ideas back and forth and try and come up with ideas that we both enjoy and we can both take turns cooking. My husband suggested that he smoke up a big pork butt and we have pulled pork. I recommended we wait on the pulled pork for a few reasons- the rainy weather we have coming all week, the cost of a huge pork butt compared to other things we could do- and then the fact that my husband only knows how to make pulled pork in absolutely huge quantities so we are both just sick and tired of it by the time we run low. We have a nearly full deep freezer as it stands right now. He agreed it might make sense to wait until the weather improves and pork butt starts going on sale.

Last night we ended up going to dinner with a few friends at a barbecue place, and I ordered a baked potato topped with pulled pork. My husband made a face when I ordered my food, I didn’t pay much attention to it but then throughout our dinner he kept making backhanded remarks/jokes about me not respecting him or valuing anything that he does for me. When we paid and got back to our car I asked him what was up with that.

My husband started ranting about how insulting it was for me to order pulled pork knowing that he was willing to cook it. He told me how I know how much he enjoys smoked meats and I must not think he can cook them well because I always try and convince him not to prepare our food that way and if I have such a problem with how he cooks then “it’s fine” and he just won’t ever be responsible for kitchen duty again but out of respect for him I shouldn’t order those foods out and about in front of him. I tried to defend myself that while I do enjoy his pulled pork it’s totally different than ordering it from a restaurant that specializes in it.

He wouldn’t speak to me the rest of the evening or so far today. AITA for ordering pulled pork?
