I (32M) accidentally walked in on my wife (30F) while she was showering. I didn’t mean to. I was half-asleep and went into the wrong bathroom. We have two, and hers is the one with all the skincare products and candles, so I usually use the other one. That morning, I’d woken up earlier than usual, wasn’t thinking clearly, and just walked in.

When I realized she was in the shower, I was caught off guard. I stood there for a moment, kind of frozen. It had been a stressful week, and in that quiet, steamy room, seeing her like that kind of overwhelmed me. I didn’t say anything, just stood there watching for maybe a minute before she noticed me. When she did, she didn’t scream or freak out—she just laughed and asked how long I’d been standing there. I apologized and quickly stepped out, but she told me it was okay and that I didn’t do anything wrong.

Later that day, we were at her parents’ house for dinner, and my wife decided to tell the story like it was a funny married-couple moment. She laughed and said, “Guess who accidentally walked in on me in the shower this morning and just stood there like a weirdo?” I kind of chuckled nervously, but her parents didn’t find it as funny. Her mom gave me a weird look, and her dad went quiet.

Afterwards, my wife admitted she maybe should’ve given me a heads-up not to joke like that around her parents, who are more conservative than I realized. But the damage was done. Her parents apparently told my parents, and now my mom called me asking why I was “peeping” on my own wife and said I should respect her privacy more. My dad called me a pervert. I feel like I’m being blown up over something small that I didn’t do maliciously.

To be clear: I didn’t do anything beyond look. I didn’t touch her, I didn’t say anything inappropriate, and I didn’t try to join her, even though, admittedly, I'd be saying if I didn'twant to. I just froze and admired her beauty for a moment, and then I left. She even reassured me that it wasn’t a big deal, but now I feel like I’m being seen as some kind of creep?

Am I the asshole or is everyone else just overreacting?
