My position at work is that of a managerial level, and part of my role requires me to make sure that those assigned to my team are actively doing certain tasks. This afternoon, I noticed that someone was HEAVILY phoning it in. I’ve had this problem with them before, and we’ve spoken about it. I’ve devoted time before, during, and after work to helping them reviewing their role, and ways to work on making the necessary improvements.
This was one of my in office days, and I happen to be walking by his desk while he was speaking to a rep from a company that we frequently collaborate with. To say that my jaw hit the floor at the lackadaisical and unprofessional way in which he was handling the call would be an understatement; I thought my eyes were going to bug out of my head from shock. I immediately told him to end the call, pulled him into my office, and asked what happened. He was very clearly feeding me lip service, so after dismissing him, I called my boss, and gave her an update. He has since received a strongly worded write up, and is in danger of losing his job.
After his meeting with my boss and I, we ran into each other outside (we’d both left the building for lunch/a break around the same time, I guess). He’s furious that I “ratted him out,” and went off about how if he loses his job it’s “my fault,” and that he can’t deal with having to find another job in this economy. It is my job to handle the situation the way that I did, but what he said has been rubbing me the wrong way. AITAH?
