I (17M) am in an honors math class and so is Jill (fake name) I go to a small private school for kids with learning differences (my grade is nearly 50 kids). My math class is very rigorous and we have tons of work. So our spring break was this week and on the last Friday before break the freshman and sophomore classes were on a field trip and the cafeteria was very quiet. During that lunch period I was doing my packet and jill was at the table behind me when she started calling out things like “what did you get for problem 4” or “can I check my answer on problem 13”. I told her twice that Mr.Math (fake name obviously) said we cannot share answers or help each other. I also told her that our teacher provided example problems that she could use but I could get in serious trouble if I said anything. After lunch I had a free period and spent it with one of our school rabbits in the middle school common area (it is very common for high schoolers to go their infancy their where 3 others their and we even have an elective where you can just sit with the school rabbits and have a study hall) however Jill found me here (even though she doesn’t have a free period) and asked for answers again. I told her it would be cheating and I said no found someone to take care of Steven (not a fake name but Steven is a rabbit so) and talked to my math teacher. To back up my case we got several kids at lunch to talk to my teacher and confirmed my story. My math teacher responded in an extreme way to say the least. I told the details as they where and Jill (like everyone at my school including me) has a learning difference and like me struggles with social cues. My point in saying this is while I think there was ill intent I don’t think it matches the crime. She was given a plagiarism violation, a possable removal from my class (tbd), suspension for the week after break, and the following weeks detention. I feel like this was really harsh and don’t think the punishment fits her crime. Because of this Jill might not get into an AP class next year and her parents are taking the schools word and are pissed. My math teacher also did not hide my identity like I asked and my most of kids in my grade minus jill’s friends have not confronted me and a few said I did the right thing (which I think I did) however after seeing the outcome I kinda wish I did everything the same but didn’t report it because (mainly because of how openly Jill was willing to do it) I don’t think she had a very ill intent. I feel really bad for her and I feel bad that I feel bad so AITAH?
