So I’ve been dating this man (31M) for six months. Six months of sleepovers, date nights, future plans, meeting friends—boyfriend behavior. He’s charming, attentive, emotionally intelligent, all the green flags.
But there were also these tiny little red ones waving in the distance. No social media. Evasive about his ex. Never talks about his past relationships. Just vibes that didn’t add up.
I’ve been burned before—gaslit, lied to, love-bombed—so I’ve learned to listen to my gut. This time, I followed it and ran a background check. Just to be safe.
Guess what I found? He’s married.
Not “once was married.” No. Currently married. Like, legally.
I confronted him, and he gave me the whole “We’ve been separated for over a year, we’re just waiting on the California 6-month finalization thing, it’s just paperwork, I swear” speech. Apparently it’s all technically true. But here’s my problem: why the hell did I have to find out from a background report and not him?
You’re dating someone exclusively for half a year and conveniently forget to mention you still have a whole-ass wife out there? That’s not a little detail. That’s not forgetting to mention a pet. That’s a marriage.
So now I’m stuck wondering: Was I out of line? Or is this man just mad he got caught not telling me something that could’ve easily come up in a “getting to know you” convo?
