I,(Female, 16) was in class today. I was in a new class with a teacher who I had never been taught by before. Since today was the last day before Spring break everyone in my class was goofing off. The teacher, who I'll call Mr. L, told us to sit down in our chairs. (We were sitting on tables) As we were getting off the tables a friend of mine jokingly shoved me onto the table. As she did this, the teacher looked at us and said "Furniture is not for sitting on." As someone who loves telling jokes I saw this as a perfect chance to tell a joke.(By the way this teacher is KNOWN for being super chill and for telling jokes in his class.) So when I saw this chance to tell this joke I did. I said "Isn't furniture meant for sitting on? Likes chairs and sometimes tables. I sit on tables often." I said this joke in a funny tone and made it out to be a joke. Everyone seemed to understand it was a joke besides Mr. L who told me "Would you like to stay after class?" So me thinking this was joke thought to myself and answered jokingly which he didn't seem to like. Mr. L then launched into a full rant about how he didn't go to school to get talked back to by some kid and how disrespectful I was. I sat there quite confused and just stared at him. When Mr. L finished my entire class was called down for a mass. (We are a Catholic school.) During Mass I broke down into tears. I was confused and embarrassed and I didn't know what to do. I understood my words could have came out as backtalk but I was making a joke which quickly spiraled into me getting embarrassed by this teacher I didn't know. After Mass my homeroom teacher pulled me aside and asked me what had happen. I broke down again and told him everything. It turns out Mr. L gave his side making me out to be some bratty stuck up kid who didn't understand how to treat their elders. When my homeroom teacher learned that all I did was say a joke he wasn't super happy with Mr. L. My homeroom teacher walked me to the counselor where he explained how out of line Mr. L was and how he overreacted at such a small joke. When we got to the counselor I explained everything and sat there the rest of the day calming down.(It was already end of day.) So I've come here to ask if I was in the wrong for saying this joke or did my teacher overreact?
