I (19F) was invited to my boyfriend’s (20M) mom’s birthday dinner. It was at this fancy restaurant, and I tried my best to look nice - cute black dress, sneakers, nothing wild. His family’s always been a bit sarcastic, but I try not to take it personally.

At dinner, one of his cousins made a joke like “Oh, wow, dressing like that just for a free steak huh?” and a few others laughed. Then my boyfriend joined in, like “Well, she does love attention,” and winked.

I was kinda stunned. I smiled at first but I honestly felt embarrassed. I didn’t say anything, but after half an hour I lied that I wasn't feeling well and I had to go, just to go home and cry myself to sleep...

He called me dramatic later, said I “should’ve known” he was joking and that it’s just his family’s sense of humor. I don’t know. Maybe I should’ve handled it differently. But like, I don’t think I looked that bad... as you can probably tell. I was expecting him to atleast idk be on my side, he knows that sometimes I don't take jokes in front of many people just like that which is why I don't make jokes about other people when in groups too.
