I (F20) and my roommate M(19) recently moved in together after a decade or so of knowing one another, I would like to note we have a strictly platonic relationship (he's gay I'm a lesbian) and with it we brought both our pets.
I have my Cat Ruffle and he has his dog Aski. We share a one bedroom and I take the living room as my segregated bedroom, we're both broke and have worked out a system where it doesn't bother us, problem is Aski is too hyperactive to be around cats (we knew this coming into the situation but I had to move in for life reasons.)
We decided a system where my cats main space would be a small laundry room with all his necessities and Aski would have my roommates room. When we go to work Ruffle gets to roam the house including the living room and when we get back he goes into the laundry room till night and Aski gets the house, we agreed on this as well because Roommate doesn't want Aski barking at the front door all day while we're gone.
Problem is on the weekends we usually switch them out freely every 2-3 hours, but things can get a little tense because roomie has had bad experience with people watching his dog before and neglecting him, so he hates to have Aski alone in a room, so when I ask to put Aski away around 9 pm so I can spend the night with Ruffle he always procrastinates and argues for more time because he doesn't want to go to bed yet.
I agree that I like spending time with him in the common space and he's welcome to stay out and just have Aski away, like how I spend most my time with Ruffle away, but I'm met with halfhearted cold shutdowns. I've been pushing a lot recently saying I want more time with my cat in the evening because by the time he comes out I'm already tired for bed, and thus he barely gets human interaction par the 20 min in the morning before I leave work, but roomie thinks I'm pushing it too much and wants time with Aski out in the living room too.
AITAH for wanting him out of the tiny laundry room at night earlier?
