so me (19F) and my boyfriend (22M) have been together for almost a year. his family is super formal, like his mom sets the table properly for dinner, they all dress nice even if they’re just eating at home. my family’s more chill, we eat in front of the tv half the time.
anyway, he invited me over for dinner and I wore a black sweater and leggings. nothing crazy, just comfy. as soon as I walked in, his mom gave me this weird look but didn’t say anything. dinner was fine, but at some point his sister (25F) went “oh, you really came in that?” and laughed a little.
I was like ??? “what’s wrong with what I’m wearing?” she just shrugged and said “it’s kinda disrespectful, don’t you think?”
his mom didn’t jump in, just gave this fake little smile. my bf just sat there, saying nothing. I got super uncomfortable but tried to brush it off.
but later, when we were alone, I told him how weird that was and he just sighed and said I “should’ve known” they expect people to dress nicely. like okay, maybe I could’ve worn jeans, but I didn’t think leggings were that bad… I mean, it’s not like I looked sloppy, you can kinda see what I mean.
but now I’m wondering, AITAH for not “dressing up” for dinner??
Please wait...
