So I (19F) went on a weekend hike with my boyfriend (22M) and his family. It was one of those “bonding trips” his mom organized. I wore a fitted tee and some high-waisted leggings - nothing wild, just what I usually wear when I go out walking. It was 85 degrees out so I wasn’t gonna show up in jeans or something.
Everything seemed fine until halfway through the hike, his mom started making passive comments like “Some girls these days really like attention” and “When I was her age I didn’t need to show off to be respected.” She never said my name but... who else could she have meant?
Then, after the hike, my boyfriend pulled me aside and told me I “should’ve worn something more respectful” around his brother and dad. I was like ?? First off, it’s leggings. Second, I didn’t notice anyone staring weird. He said his brother “kept glancing” and it made him uncomfortable.
I said something like “You know what I wore wasn’t inappropriate. And if your brother was staring, maybe that’s a him problem?” He got super quiet and just said “You like when people look, don’t you?”
Now his mom thinks I “brought drama” into the family, and his brother hasn’t said a word. It’s been awkward ever since. I don’t feel like I did anything wrong - I was just trying to enjoy a hike and dress like myself.
I mean, I don’t think I looked that scandalous... as you can see. Sooo... AITAH?
