My husky/shephard, I've had for 7 years, recently passed away now, killed a now Ex's pet duck.
A little back story, my pup has had a raw diet ever since I rescued him. He has killed grou dogs and mice around the house in the past. Even a chipmunk caught off guard. Although he has a history of being aggressive towards rodents, and vermin in his yard. He's never EVER showed aggression towards cats, small dogs, or any other typical pet you'd think to have. Curious maybe, but never aggressive.
My ex, narcissistic, and a bit unhinged (in the bad way), had a few pet ducks. So when I brought my pup over, I knew to have them separated at all times. I had gone over to her house one day and he saw them in their cage, they usually roam free, but they were locked up so I allowed him to sniff them and investigate. I noticed he was a bit TOO interested in them so I decided it was best to just nip it in the bud and not play with fire. I put him away from them in a seperate yard and locked the gate. We were having lunch outside and my ex went into their cage to clean it, change food and water. Aside from the outside man-door, inside the cage it's worth it to note there's a secondary cage with a door 4ft high, which also has a small latch lock. After she was done, she came back and decided to let the dogs out. She had 2 newfoundlands, and a smaller pup, as well as mine. They roam free because they're all well behaved and we don't have to worry about them taking off. My dog immediately went over to the duck cage, and I caught it right away. I told her to please not let him out ad he's TOO interested in the ducks and I put him back into the yard. I go to the bathroom, and when I come back my dog isn't in the yard. I asked where he was and they said "he shouldn't be in the yard when all the other pups were out". I started looking for him anyway and I heard rustling in the duck coop. I ran over and my dog come out with her duck in his mouth. She isn't dead yet, but she's bleeding internally because she has blood coming out of her bill. My ex and her mother are freaking out and yelling at me to control my dog. I quickly acted and pried my dogs mouth open to remove the duck. We then quickly got into my car and started driving to the pet hospital. The duckndied in my exes arms half way there from internal bleeding.
Now after all was said and done, my ex refused to talk to me, her mother blames me for what happened, and although I feel extremely bad, I can't help but think this was NOT my fault. I did everything I could to keep them separated and safe. AITAH?
