I need some perspective on this situation. I, (15F) and my uncle's wedding was supposed to be on March 20. I had already told my mom that I wasn't going to attend because I had some important school stuff coming up.
My reasons for not attending were: - I had a big reporting project worth 60% of my grade and I couldn't afford to mess it up. - I get car sick easily and dealing with nausea is a real pain. - We had a PE culmination event coming up that was also worth 60% of our grade, and I had been practicing for weeks.
Fast forward to the day after our PE culmination rehearsal, my mom surprises me with a dress for the wedding. I'm thinking, "Wait, what? I told her I wasn't going." She says she'll just call my teacher and explain that the wedding is important because it's my mom's brother and he attended her wedding in college.
I'm baffled because I had already explained my reasons to her, and I was worried about my grades. I've always worked hard to keep my grades up, and I wasn't going to risk it for a family event, no matter how important it is.
My mom got angry and called me embarrassing, saying that this is a once-in-a-lifetime event and my uncle will be expecting me there. But I'm confused - if she was fine with me not going in the first place, why is she angry now?
So, AITAH for prioritizing my grades and not attending the wedding? Or was my mom out of line for expecting me to drop everything for this event?
(My mother is still bringing this up and still talking about how I prioritize my grades over my Uncle’s wedding until now and uses that against me every time I don’t want to go out with my family.)
Edit: I’m planned to be the bridesmaid. Also, at the end I did NOT attend and the wedding had no bridesmaid.
TL;DR: 15F didn't want to attend uncle's wedding due to school commitments, mom got angry and bought a dress last minute, now I'm feeling guilty and confused.
