My boyfriend and I have been together for 6.5 years. For a long time, I’ve felt like I’m the one making all the emotional effort in the relationship. A few weeks ago, I clearly told him that I would really appreciate if he gave me thoughtful gifts sometimes — not just random small things, but gifts that feel meaningful or special. (Even if they’re not super expensive, just thoughtful.)
After that conversation, he sent me a yogurt and a small chocolate, and that’s it. No real effort after that. No surprise, no special gesture, nothing.
Today again, I casually sent him a reel (a funny Instagram video) showing a saree I liked and said something like, “Buy me this.” His response? Just “send me the link.” It felt very transactional, not warm or excited.
To add to it — we’ve been in a long-distance relationship for 11 months now. He hasn’t made any real effort to come and meet me either. I’ve been very understanding about his financial struggles (he’s in debt), but emotional effort doesn’t cost money.
Now I’m feeling really hurt, frustrated, and honestly kind of angry. I’m wondering: Am I the asshole for expecting real gifts and effort after 6.5 years together? Or am I expecting too much?
Would love to hear honest opinions.
