The reason behind my logic was he offered a solution for 3 nights in a row but chose not to spend the time, money or energy to go to a foreign drug store. The gel based ear plug was the only one capable of blocking his noise.

This is not made up. I also wouldn’t have used a gel based ear plug if he did his part. When we got home at night he told us he didn’t get one the gel based was the only one I had available that worked. If this still makes me an asshole then I accept the consensus, but my logic is: “if I’m in a situation where I caused someone a ton of inconvenience, I will never be the person to expect the inconvenienced person to take action when I can do something to stop inconveniencing them. If this logic is wrong then I’m an asshole!

Hi Reddit, first time poster here. I want to see if people feel like I handled this situation unreasonably.

I am currently traveling in Tokyo with a friend and his acquaintance (aka Timmy). The three of us are splitting a hotel room because we wanted to save money and agreed to split a room. Unfortunately, Timmy here has a ridiculously loud snore when he sleeps and he is disrupting my friend and I’s sleep cycle. I am an even lighter sleeper than my friend so this has caused me to be unable to get into deep sleep for several nights.

After the first night, I brought this up to Timmy in a joking manner and he mentioned that he will buy a mouth guard to control his snoring. He did not do this. The second night goes by and I bring it up in a friendly way again and he casually mentioned the mouth guard yet he still does not take action. This inaction has caused me to use a silicon based ear plug every night to stuff out his thunderbolt like snores.

During the third night, we’re out drinking in Tokyo and while drinking I bring this up to him again. He mentions he will find a solution yet he still does not take action. When I wake up in the morning I realize that the gel ear plug has broken in half and a portion of it is lodged quite deep in my ear canal. I rush to the ER and footed a 50000 yen bill to remove this.

After this event I am absolutely livid. However I ask him very kindly through text if he is willing to foot for half of the bill, since he isn’t responsible for his snores but IMO he is responsible for taking action so that his condition doesn’t cause others harm.

After asking, he calls me an asshole and says I’ve ruined the whole trip, and offered to get a separate room if I refund his 1/3 of the hotel cost. I am wondering if it was selfish of me to ask him to split my ER bill since my friend feels that this isn’t his responsibility either.
