A friend was in a pickle and unhoused with no water or electricity or a place to store or prepare food. I loaned her some high quality camping gear (coolers, stove, sleeping pads) and was clear that I was not giving it to her and expected it to be returned when she no longer needed it. She got an apartment several months ago and I have been asking for my gear back. She's made plenty of excuses that she keeps forgetting about it despite her coming to my place frequently. I asked again two weeks ago and said I planned to go camping for my birthday and I needed my gear and she agreed to drop it off. I followed up twice, and the day before I was scheduled to leave she told me she stored my gear at her father's house and he threw it away. I was shocked that she didn't even offer an apology! I told her I felt disrespected, but I had broken my own rule of not loaning out anything I wasn't willing to part with because I have been screwed over before and told her to just drop it. I was fuming and didn't want to discuss it. Later she messaged and said she would try and replace it with gear from Walmart that is of much lesser quality and I am absolutely insulted! I'm not an elitist but I worked hard to buy quality gear and don't feel as though she's doing much of a favor by getting something of lesser quality. AITA?
