Short background story to me: I was raised up in a household with a German shepherd who turned out to get jealous towards me in my sister. He came into the habit of chasing me in my sister in the garden knowing which spots are not visible from inside, he also bit my older sister in one of these chases. I was terrified at that moment, but the dog knew he could only make us frightened not really bear the consequences of actually hurting us. In the end, he actually hurt my father, had to be executed as no other person or institution wanted to take care of an aggressive dog. At that day, I was even very sad and hid his favourite bone behind a heater which I found 25 years later.

My sister developed fright of dogs obviously afterwards. I never developed fear, nor huge affection towards dogs. I tried to like them, but I always found that I hated their smell, them licking around. I always got nauseous when being in a car of dog people.

Now towards the actual AITAH question: my wife and I said we do not want to have dogs in our apartment. We invited my mother in law and my wife’s brother over for this long weekend. It would have been possible for one person to sleep on a mattress in the working room, however, my wife suggested that the mother would take a hotel close by that was okay with hosting dogs.

I said to her, that she can make a point in communicating that I do not want to have dogs over. And I could be the one to blame. So everybody was fine with that solution.

It turns out, the mother found the big city too stressful, the hotels AC also broke down, leaving the room at 27°C at night at an unusual high temperature +15°C for 2 days. It cooled off now, but my mother in law decided to leave. She told my wife I was too harsh and even under the circumstances I could have let the dogs into the apartment, even for a bit. AITH?

TL;DR: I refused to let the dogs of my mother in law into our apartment. I stayed that strict even though a 2 day heat wave caused issues with the AC of the hotel where the mother in law and dogs were staying.
