My buddy and I (both 41m) have been friends since the third grade. He is a textbook example of a doormat, and I have always been there to try and help him. For the last 10 years or more, he has been heavily interested in this girl/woman that has been stringing him along because he will watch her kids and dog for her (in his parent's house) while she goes out and chases down her next victim. I attempted a couple times to talk to him about this to gain some clarity on why he allows her to do this to him. His retort was that he loves her. As his friend I told him what he was doing is insane, it's been over a decade and she is not interested to the point that she publicly stated on social media just six days ago that she is happily single and still sort of involved with her ex-husband (despite the constant police presence). After our talk I told him that I have my opinions and feelings, but he will obviously do whatever he is going to do, and I let it go. He said he appreciated my input.
We usually get on our computers and game at night and chat after we put our kids to bed. The last few days he hasn't gotten on and was ignoring my messages. We have talked about this a few times when he goes MIA that if he is sick/busy or whatever to just let me know "busy today" or whatever when he gets a chance. So today I get a message out of nowhere that he will "always cherish our friendship and that he will miss me" which was wildly out of left field. I tried to call him a few times and he picked up and just said "my life doesn't revolve around you, don't call me anymore." Then hung up on me. I am angry, sad, hurt, a bit in shock.... Was I the a**hole here? He only gets weird like this when he is talking to this chick whom is very much no Bueno.
(This dude once dumped $28,000 into a chick that spent it all on cocaine because he wanted to date her. She actually tried to say her drugs were his when she got popped by police, and he spent a weekend in jail, and never even got to hold her hand.)
