📝 Okay how awful of a person am I? AITAH?

I work in a small insurance agency. Been in the insurance industry for nearly a decade. I’m licensed in property and casualty, and I work as a customer service representative.

The office I work in consists of me, two coworkers who are sales, and the agent.

The agent is pretty much MIA most days, and my two coworkers are bffs, love to gossip all day, and go to lunch together. Then there’s me. The black sheep. I tend to keep to myself, mind my own business, and focus on my work. My workload is often rather large and I have to be very diligent to keep on top of things and avoid mistakes. My job isn’t difficult, it’s just very non-stop.

My coworkers, on top of spending most of the day chit-chatting, love to take very long breaks. We’re only supposed to get one hour but they take 1.5, sometimes 2 hours. They also both leave early every day. (Which, btw, they are not supposed to leave early, and it is their job to help with customer service. Like answer phones if I’m already on a call. Things like that.)

Here’s the thing, I don’t care if they leave early or take long breaks. I’m not their boss. What I do care about is that they expect me to be perfectly punctual, and not only do my own work but pull some of their weight. Like finishing up a sale for them if a potential client happens to follow up after they’ve left for the day.

When I’m the only one left in the office at the end of the day, it’s already enough keeping up with incoming calls without any help, while trying to make sure all my work is caught up before I leave. This evening, after both my coworkers left, I had two customers call at the very end of the day to report roof damage from recent storms. Those calls take a bit of time. There were two of them with only 20 minutes left in the day. As I’m talking to the second caller, someone else calls. I can’t pick up because I’m already on the phone. So they leave a voicemail. After finishing up the call I was on, I go ahead and check the voicemail. Making sure it’s not an emergency. It wasn’t. A customer was calling one of my coworkers back to start her daughter’s car insurance. A customer that texted my coworker (not personal phone but via office text app on our computers) when she was still here and coworker didn’t respond to. So now she’s calling because coworker gave her no response to her text.

But by the time I finished listening to the voicemail it was 5pm. We close at 5. Unlike my coworkers, I stayed until 5. And I don’t get a 1.5+ hour breaks multiple times a week. I’m beyond tired and I just want to go home. I wouldn’t get a dime of commission if I finished her sale for her anyway. And asking for overtime would be a hassle because I’m salary. Although nonexempt, boss isn’t big on overtime, it’s just not worth it unless it’s an hour or more. I’d be staying late, using my time, with nothing to show for. Except earning my coworker’s commission for her while she’s at home.

I’ll tell her Monday morning to call the customer. If the customer finds insurance somewhere else over the weekend? Oh well…

And the fact still stands. Even if my coworker had a legit reason to leave early, she didn’t text the customer back when she was still here because she was too busy griping to me about her family and politics. I would think you’d want to make sure all your ducks are in a row before leaving on a Friday, especially if you’re planning on leaving early. Not spending your last 15 minutes talking about nonsense.
