I flew back to the San Diego Airport last night and the passenger pickup area was very busy. I am in a wheelchair and was waiting for my Wife to return from long term parking with our car. At this Airport you are not supposed to park at the pickup zones, you are supposed to wait at a cellphone lot and pick up your passenger when they are at the curb. Usually the are security agents waving people away that are just sitting in their cars. In my case, I was waiting at the marked handicapped pick up zone watching people pull up and park to wait for handicapped and non-handicapped passengers. My Wife called when she was two minutes away from pickup and the handicapped zone was full of cars waiting for their passengers. I rolled up to someone who had been parked for over 15 minutes and said my ride would be here shortly. I asked if he could move since this was a handicapped pickup zone and my ride was ready to pick me up. The drivers first response was to shove a handicap plaque in my face and tell me to leave. I responded that this was not a parking zone and he should let others in who were ready for pick up. At this point he started insulting me and telling me leave him alone. I rolled away and the next lady parked in the zone asked me if I wanted her to move. I said yes please since my ride was 30 seconds out. She was able to back up to a recently available non-handicaped spot and my wife shortly pulled up, we loaded our luggage and were on our way. This entire time, the other driver was still parked in the handicapped pickup zone with no passenger in sight.
Was I an a- hole for asking him to move?
