Title says it all.
(21M) got into a stupid argument with my friend (22M) a few days ago that spiraled way beyond what I ever expected. We were both in a study hall at our university library, and I asked to borrow his mechanical pencil. He refused, jokingly at first, but I was already annoyed with him from earlier. Things escalated quickly—words were exchanged, and it turned into a brief physical scuffle.
It honestly wasn’t serious. It was more like shoving and grabbing at the pencil than a real fight. But in the chaos, I tripped over a chair and bumped into a nearby table. A woman sitting there (I later found out she was about 5 months pregnant) was startled and tried to get up quickly. In the process, she fell and ended up hitting her abdomen on the edge of the table.
Security and medics were called, and she was taken to the hospital. I just found out yesterday that she sadly miscarried. I’m devastated. I can’t stop thinking about it. I didn’t even touch her directly, but my actions still caused it. Her husband showed up at the library afterward and screamed at me, calling me a murderer. My friend hasn’t spoken to me since.
My family and some friends say it was just a tragic accident and I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. But others are saying I acted irresponsibly and that no matter the intent, someone lost a child because of something I started over a pencil. I can’t stop replaying it in my head.
And to make matters worse, my cousin told me I “Thanos-snapped a fetus over a mechanical pencil,” and now that phrase lives rent-free in my brain during every waking moment.
So… AITA?
