My wife (30F), myself (31M),, and our two children recently took a week long vacation to visit her family who lives in a different state (US). We paid a friend of ours (21F) and her boyfriend (20M) to take care of our dog while we were away. We have known them for a few years and considered them really close friends. Upin returning home from vacation we found the house trashed. Massive stains on the floor from dog urine and feces. They cleaned up the feces and just left the urine which has caused our hardwood floors to warp and need replaced. The smell in the house is just horrendous as well. We do have a security system that shows date and time of when it was armed and disarmed as well as outdoor cameras that show who is coming and going. I never thought to check while we were away to make sure they were doing what they needed to. Looking back I probably should have. We laid his schedule out with them before we left and they ensured us that it would be no issue. One of them would come over at least 4 times a day. 8am, 12pm, 4pm, and 8pm.
After discovering all of this I checked the timeliness on our security system. They were on coming over 2 or 3 times a day. 11am, 1pm, and 4pm. This is not ok. Our dog was left alone almost every day from 4pm to 11am the next day. I don't blame him at all for doing what he did. When you gotta go, you gotta go.
I confronted them with the pictures and the timeline from the security system and they lied straight to my face. They said they were at our house more often than their own during our vacation. They blamed our dog, stating he had "separation anxiety" from us being away and that's what caused him to do it. They also claimed to have "deep cleaned" our house multiple times while we were away, which there is zero evidence of based on what we saw.
After the conversation I asked for our money back (we paid them up front, I know, stupid move). They refused. I told them it was the least they could do considering they didn't hold up their end of the agreement and it was now going to cost me hundreds if not thousands to have my floors repaired. They still refused. So, I filed a chargeback with our bank. Now I'm being harassed, and threatened for doing so.
AITAH for holding them accountable?
