I work at a small accounting firm with about 15 people. Last month, my coworker Sarah mentioned her cat had kittens. Four were healthy, but one was born blind. She casually said she was "going to have it put down" since "nobody wants a defective cat" and "it would be a mercy."
I was horrified but kept my composure and offered to take the blind kitten. She seemed surprised but agreed, saying, "Your funeral. It'll be nothing but vet bills."
I picked up tiny Luna that weekend. She was only 6 weeks old, completely white with beautiful blue eyes that don't track movement. The vet confirmed she's perfectly healthy otherwise - just congenitally blind.
Luna adapted incredibly quickly. She mapped my apartment within days, uses her whiskers and hearing to navigate flawlessly, and plays just like any kitten. She's affectionate, playful, and completely unbothered by her blindness.
Yesterday, Sarah asked how "that poor creature" was doing. When I showed her videos of Luna playing and climbing her cat tree, Sarah seemed almost disappointed. She then asked if she could "have Luna back" since her kids were "sad about losing the white kitten."
I refused. Sarah got angry, claiming I "manipulated" her into giving up a family pet. She's now telling coworkers I "stole" her kitten, and some people are suggesting I should return Luna to "keep the peace."
AITA for refusing to return a blind kitten to someone who was literally going to euthanize her for being blind?
