My (31F) brother (30M) got married last weekend. Beautiful wedding, everything went smoothly… until it came time for my speech.
For a bit of backstory, my brother had this super elaborate imaginary friend named Captain Waffles. Not just a passing phase—this guy had lore. He had a pirate ship, a tragic backstory, and apparently a peanut allergy. My brother lived and breathed Captain Waffles until he was like 13. He would talk to him at dinner, set a place for him, even wrote a song about him (which my mom still has).
Anyway, I thought it’d be a funny little throwback to bring up Captain Waffles during my speech—lightly, nothing mean. All I said was, “And while Captain Waffles couldn’t be here today, I’m sure he’d approve of Hannah (his wife) as first mate.” A couple of people laughed.
But my brother didn’t.
He looked pissed. After the speech, he pulled me aside and said I embarrassed him in front of his wife’s family and made him look “mentally unstable.” I apologized, but I honestly thought it was harmless and even endearing. It was a cute childhood story, not something shameful.
Now he won’t talk to me, and my mom says I should’ve known better than to bring that up in public. But our friends say it was a funny, wholesome moment and that my brother needs to lighten up.
So, AITA?
