I'm a student who's currently doing A-levels privately, which means I don't go to school; instead, I go to academies and reach out to private tutors. I've been going to an academy for 6 months now, trying to study for my A-level composite a level exams this May. In that academy for the first two months, I hadn't made any friends, just some people I would say hi to and offer some gum to if they were sitting next to me. For the past 4 months, more students joined, and I started growing closer to certain people who were in the same classes as me. Long story short, I became friends with some people, and we were a group of 2 girls and 2 guys. During our classes we were taking pictures of whatever was written on the board because we were too lazy to write it and so instead of sending them to each person individually, i asked one of the girls, who we will call A for sake of privacy, to make a groupchat of us so we could send pictures. over time we started talking more and i got to see their actual personalities. Backstory for me, I grew up speaking English as my first language, so I don't talk in my native language as well as my friends do. Because of this, they poked fun at the fact that I didn't know some words or made grammatical errors. It was funny until it just started getting repetitive. And soon it felt less like jokes and more like insults. Like if any one of them didn't know the meaning of a word, they would say you sound like Z(me).." and the person they said this to would look and sound almost offended to be compared to me. wWheni tried to turn the tables onto them and poked fun on them for not knowing english well and the fact that they needed 3 minutes to interpret what i just said, they would say things like "we dont wanna be you." a few days ago, these people decided to play a prank on me and decided to hide my phone from me just minutes before class. I had never done anything like this to anyone, so it was a first for m,e and needless to say, I panicked. I ran up and down 3 flights of stairs 4 times to try and find my phone, but I couldn't. Whenn i couldnt bear it any longer, they pulled it out the chair and were like "its been right here dumbass" not knowing that i had already checked that chair and was not even close to the chair throughout the day. I kind of lashed out at them, and I decided to walk away, and I was so mad that I left our group chat.
today i asked A to add me back into the groupchat because i had a few questions that i wanted to ask them and i sort of reconciled with them at academy. when i joined, the "jokes" they made about me were now just straight up insults. making fun of my language, my actions, my studies. they hinted on wanting me to leave like, "if L(girl number 2) starts studying then Z(me) you have to leave the groupchat again" since L barely studies i thought they meant that i was gonna stay for a long time. then L replied "guess i should go hurry then" to which B(other boy) said "now that L started studying Z you should take a hint." i ignored it thinking it was one of their jokes. now 10 minites ago, A said "Why havent you left yet, L started studying, were having a study sesh right now." this made me feel so unwelcome that i decided to leave the groupchat and unfollow and block them.
idk if im overreacting or whatever but ive never been in this situation before. im a very kind person who doesnt say anything bad about anyone and i had been nothing but nice to them and all my jokes were well in the range of just humor but their jokes were in insult territory but i decided to give them the benefit of the doubt since i never had friends like them. so AITA?
