My wife needs a new car as her current lease is coming to an end! She does a 60 mile round trip 3 days a week for work. It has also been financially draining - $400 p/m for the car $150 p/m for insurance and $200 a month for gas! She only $3.7k pre taxes. I work from home, don’t need a car and make about $25k a month! I also pay all the household bills including medical insurance - She only pays for groceries
I have been saving and I am on route to save well over $100k! Feels good!
Here's the situation: we have been exploring options for cars! I told her she needs to buy the cheapest option because that is what she can afford! But in truth even a $12k car with a loan is expensive. Man oh man - mind you I have never owned a car before.
If you lease the monthly payment are about $500 a month excluding gas and insurance for 3 years. They both seem like loosing situations and I can see it is stressing her out.
As I stated earlier, I don’t want to derail my financial plan. I need my finances to be in order and paying $12k in a car seems like a stupid decision to me! I also told her to take money from the family saving accounts to pay down her debt and now she’s back in CC debt! She claims she don’t make enough and cost of living is high.
Am I wrong?
