📝 AITA for refusing to invite my mom to my wedding after she said my fiancé 'wasn’t good enough' for me?

My fiancé and I have been together for 3 years. He's kind, grounded, and has supported me through some of the hardest times of my life. We’re planning a small wedding in the fall, mostly close friends and some family. I’ve always had a rocky relationship with my mom — she’s very judgmental and tends to make everything about herself. Still, I was planning to invite her because, well, she’s my mom.

That changed a few weeks ago when she met my fiancé for the first time over dinner. She was cold from the moment he said hello. She kept asking him intrusive questions about his job (he's a mechanic), made snide remarks about his “greasy hands,” and later that night, told me privately that I was “settling beneath myself.” She literally said, “You could do so much better than a guy who works with tools for a living.”

I was stunned. I reminded her that he’s the most dependable person I’ve ever known, and that he treats me better than anyone I’ve dated — including the “successful” men she always tried to push me toward. She brushed it off and said, “Well, you’ll regret not marrying up someday.” That was the last straw for me. I told her I was seriously reconsidering her wedding invite if she couldn’t respect my partner.

A few days later, I called her and told her, calmly, that unless she apologized and showed she could be respectful, I wasn’t comfortable having her at the wedding. She doubled down, saying she was “just being honest” and that I was being “overly sensitive.” So I told her not to come.

Now, other family members — especially my aunt and cousin — are saying I’m taking it too far and that I’ll regret not having my mom at my wedding. But I don’t want that kind of negativity on what should be a joyful day. I don’t feel like I’m wrong, but the guilt is starting to creep in.
