So I (24F) live with a roommate (22F), let’s call her Jenny. We’ve been living together for like 8 months now, and it’s been mostly okay. We split rent, groceries, and all that — but we’re not exactly close friends or anything. I work full-time and use my car to commute every day. Jenny doesn't have a car, which isn’t a big deal since she works remotely and most stuff she needs is in walking distance.
A few days ago, she comes into my room kind of panicked, saying she needs to go see her boyfriend who just got into a fight with his parents or something. She asks if she can borrow my car just for like “an hour or two” to go check on him. I was like… sorry, no. First off, my car isn’t even on the insurance plan for other drivers, and second, I just don’t feel comfy letting other people drive it. I’ve had it less than a year and I’m still paying it off monthly.
She got really upset and said I was being selfish and cold. I told her I was sorry, but it’s just not something I’m comfortable with. She muttered something about how “some people only care about their stuff” and stormed off. Since then, she’s been really passive aggressive — slamming doors, not talking much, acting like I did something horrible.
Some of my friends say I was totally right to say no, but a part of me feels bad cause she seemed really desperate. But also, like, it’s my car and it’s not even an emergency like a hospital thing or whatever. Just drama with her boyfriend.
So yeah… AITA?
