I'm about to move out and I'm strongly considering not paying my last month's rent. My landlord has consistently violated our rental agreement and caused me numerous problems during my stay. On 3 separate occasions, he didn't pay the bills, resulting in the hot water being shut off twice. Another time, the electricity was disconnected for the same reason, even though I always transferred my payments on time. (bills included obviously)
These utility disruptions are just a fraction of the issues I've dealt with. Moreover, I have a security deposit equal to one month's rent, which I'm convinced he'll unjustly keep for himself no matters what..he's proven himself to be dishonest in the past, and I'm sure he'll invent reasons to avoid returning it. For context, when I moved in, the apartment was filthy and infested with cockroaches, yet I'm leaving it cleaner and in far better condition than when I arrived here.
Given all this, I've decided not to pay the last month's rent because I know he'll unjustly keep my deposit anyway. At this point, I'd rather let him use that money to cover the final rent payment than be ripped off by paying my last month rent and still not getting my deposit back.
AITA here?
