I (23F) went out to dinner with a group of friends last weekend. We picked this fancy place that’s kind of pricey, but I figured it would be a nice treat. Thing is, I’m on a pretty tight budget right now, so I just ordered a small salad and a water. My total was about $12.
Meanwhile, everyone else ordered appetizers, entrees, desserts, cocktails — the whole nine yards. The table’s total ended up being over $400. When the bill came, someone suggested we just split it evenly, and it would come out to around $70 each.
I said, politely, that I didn’t feel comfortable paying that much when I barely ordered anything. I offered to just pay for what I had plus tax and tip. Some of them were understanding, but a couple of people got weird about it, saying I was “killing the vibe” and “making it complicated.”
Now I’m wondering if I should’ve just sucked it up and paid the $70 to avoid the drama. But honestly, that’s a lot of money for a salad and some awkward conversation.
AITA?
