My brother (35M) is the kind of guy who’s always chasing the next big thing. One month it’s crypto, the next it’s a podcast, then he’s selling supplements on TikTok. None of these ideas have ever taken off — usually because he loses interest or doesn’t follow through. I (32F), on the other hand, have a steady job and I’ve been saving to buy my first home.
A couple of weeks ago, he came to me with this “genius” idea to start a food truck that only sells raw, organic smoothies — but here’s the kicker: they’re personalized based on your astrological sign. He had no business plan, just vibes and a Canva-made logo. He asked me to loan him $10,000 to help get it off the ground. He promised I’d make it back “within a few months” and told me I’d be part of something “revolutionary.”
I laughed. Not to be mean, but because I genuinely thought he was joking. When I realized he was serious, I told him no — that I’m saving for my future and I don’t feel comfortable investing in something that sounds more like a hobby than a real plan. I also mentioned that he still owes me $800 from when I helped him out during his “music producer phase” two years ago.
He got really upset and called me unsupportive. He told our mom that I’m selfish and trying to “hold him back from his potential.” Now the whole family is on me, saying I should “believe in him” and “invest in family, not just money.” I feel like I'm being guilt-tripped into funding yet another one of his half-baked ideas.
I get wanting to follow your dreams — I really do — but I’m tired of being his backup wallet. AITA for finally telling him no and being blunt about how unrealistic I think his idea is?
