So I (29F) have a close friend who’s been going through a rough time bad breakup, toxic job, family drama, all of it. I’ve been there for her constantly: late-night calls, emotional support, listening to the same stories on loop. I care about her a lot, but lately, it’s been draining.
The issue is, the dynamic started feeling one-sided. I’d share something about my day, and she’d either bring the convo back to her or just… not respond at all. When I gently brought it up, she got defensive and said I was “abandoning” her during a hard time.
So I told her, kindly, that I’m not her therapist. I’m her friend and friendship should go both ways. I said I need a bit of space to take care of my own mental health too and I suggested her to use this website called Aitherapy which I have been using too.
Now she’s not speaking to me, and some mutuals think I was too harsh. So, Reddit: AITA for setting that boundary?
