Hello Reddit, This is my first time posting here and I think I need some advice and maybe constructive criticism. Also I apologize for the length of this post but I also need to rant about this since Noone seems to be on my side on this. So I (18F) am graduating this May. Not to toot my horn but maybe for background information, I am a really good student, meaning almost straight As and some Bs, so my opinion may be biased becauee I am a good student.
To get to the point, my class has a few students that are not the best academically. One guy specifically always was more of an avarage grade guy. He manged to pass all grades, sometimes just barley. He was always very laid back and was the kind of kid that would come to one class and then leave again. Many teachers complained about his lack of attendance, because if you're missing more than 50% they can't grade you which means you'll most likely get an F. Our art teachers have complained over and over that they haven't seen him for 2 months at time sometimes. No matter how much he got warned, he always seemed to brush it off. Now this is pure speculation, but it seemed to me that he always thought that he'd be able to pass somehow if he puts in some effort last second. Basically putting in the bare minimum to pass. It worked until this year.
Well the same happened this year, his attendance was as good as non-existent, teachers complained. The problem with our final year is that we only have until April, not until June, to fix our grades. Maybe he underestimated this difference. But in February he got warned: He had 4 or 5 subjects he was failing, and in order to graduate you can only have a max of one. So he put in the work and was able to fix most of them. His plan was to improve every subject except for one, which he'd improve in an exam before graduation.
To put it short: He failed. He failed Italian AND biology, which means he can't graduate. On the day before our grades were to be finalized he had an oral exam and I even sat next to him as a witness to make sure the teacher graded fairly. And he got barley more than the half right, which is a D. Sadly, he needed atleast a C to pass. The teacher tried to give him some extra points by asking him some more questions that weren't on his sheet but he didn't know. He admitted he didnt learn that section too much and asked her to ask him more about a different topic which he knew but the teacher said it wasn't possible because they were already 20 minutes over the time limit. He begged with our biology teacher to let him pass, even the whole class jumped in to support him, but the teacher said it's not possible. He barley had 50% attendance, failed the first exam, out of the 3 written "check ups" we had he did one, and that one was mid aswell.
Here is where I might be the asshole: I think that this is just karma. This is my opinion: He's an adult (19) and he knew that 8th grade was much shorter than the rest of high school. He was warned over and over by many teachers. He went and came whenever he wanted to, did most of his stuff half-assed, and always expected to pass. I think it's also incredibly stupid that he decided to do the exam to fix his grade to be able to GRADUATE on the last possible chance. Had he done it just a day before he would have been able to maybe fix it, but he did it last second, like he always did. Do I think it sucks that he won't be able to graduate with his friends because of a subject that is insegnificant for him? Yes. But I saw that the teacher was desperate and wanted to let him pass, but she even showed proof, there was just no credit to give.
When I told this to my sister, who is goes to the same school and struggles in biology (but that is bc of the teacher), she said that I was an entitled princess and should get my head out of my ass. That I can't understand what he goes through because I'm priviliged because I am the perfect student and every teacher gushes aboht me. Most of my classmates would probably think so aswell.
So reddit, AITA?
