📝 AITA for trusting someone I thought would help me in a desperate situation?

A couple of months ago, I moved to a new country and into my own space (21F) and didn’t realize one of the rooms had a door that automatically locks when shut. One day, I accidentally locked my keys inside that room. After trying to pick the lock and attempting to fish the keys out of the window without success, I had no choice but to seek outside help.

I live in a tight knit community in Jamaica and knew of a local handyman (50ish M) in the area and asked him if he could help me retrieve the keys. As we were talking I felt rain coming down that later turned into heavy, intense rain, typical of Jamaica weather and he agreed to help. He told me to follow him to his house, saying he needed to freshen up to go out and then he’d drop me back to my place with the key. I didn’t suspect anything unusual about his request at the time.

Once at his house, I waited as usual. He then comes out and he asks what I wanted him to do again. I told him about the keys and he said if I want something done I must give him something in return. I laughed it off, I wanted to leave but the rain was so heavy it would be pointless. Suddenly, without warning or my consent, he pushed himself onto me, picked me off my feet and assaulted me sexually. After the assault, he dropped me back off and retrieved the key as promised.

Since that incident, I’ve been ostracized by many in the area. People have started calling me “dirty” and “nasty,” and it feels like they’re treating me as if I invited this behavior. Was it my fault that I went up there? Should I have done more to stop the ordeal? AITA for trusting someone I thought would help me in a desperate situation?
