I just want to share my story and express my deepest gratitude to someone who helped me when I had nothing. It was November 2022, and I was at my lowest point. My mom was undergoing treatment, and it drained all of my savings. My siblings couldn’t contribute, and even my friends seemed to forget about me, ignoring my messages. My boyfriend even broke up with me because he couldn’t even help me with the most basic things like transportation or food. I hadn’t had a job for over a month, and everything felt hopeless. One person who saw me and helped me when I had nothing. One evening, I was sitting by the cafeteria. A man approached me and ask if I wanted to eat some food. He offered to pay for me and even for three kids who were begging nearby. I was starving, so I agreed. So i agreed. He seemed genuinely kind and respectful, both in the way he spoke to me and the cashier of a cafeteria. While we ate, I opened up to him about my situation, and I felt lighter just talking to someone. After we finished eating, the cashier said the bill was about $17. The man gave the cashier a $100 bill, but the cashier said there was no change. He then asked if i had any small change, and told him I only had $35 left. He asked for my $20 and used it to pay for the meal and even took out food for my mom. Then, he reached out his hand and said, “This is my way of paying you back. Please keep it safe, someone might see.” He handed me $700. I was shocked and told him it was too much. But he smiled and said, “This is just the start of your new life. When I saw you sitting there, you looked like you were starving. After hearing your story, I just felt like I had to help, even in this small way. I’ve been where you are before, when we had nothing, but things changed for us eventually. Don’t worry, I’ll earn it back. When you get back on your feet you can pay me back slowly. And one day, things will align for you too” He never asked for my name and only gave me his as he left. He then left and took a bus, never asking anything more of me. I went home with the takeout for my mom, and she cried because, with out financial struggles, we often lived on canned goods or dried fish. When I got to my room, I broke down and whispered a prayer of thanks. Since then, things have slowly started to get better for us. And now I have a stable job that can pay for my mom’s treatment and cover our daily needs. I want to thank from the bottom of my heart to the man who for being reason for my new life. Your kindness gave me hope when I had none. And for anyone out there who feels hopeless, I hope someone like him will come into your life — someone who will beleive in you and help you find your way.
