Both my bf (26) and I (27) decided to start going to the gym for health benefits. I have some knowledge about leg workouts but I am a beginner. I am not confident enough to go to the gym alone and try these exercises (fear my form will be wrong/I look like a joke.) My bf and I agreed he would get a gym membership and I would be his guest since we’d always go together. It also saves us some $ instead of buying 2 memberships. He also told me he’d obviously help me. He isn’t a very muscular guy but I’ve been told he worked out a lot in high school so he understands the basics. He told me I will just follow whatever exercises he does, leave the picking of the exercises to him.
We’ve been going to the gym for about 3 weeks now and he has been barely any help. I find myself getting more and more annoyed. As mentioned, I can figure out how to do leg workouts but as of right now biceps/triceps/back/chest I have no clue. I’ve watched some videos on how to learn but I wanted to rely mostly on my boyfriend as he said I could.
My boyfriend will bring me to a machine or free weight section, use the machine and when it’s my turn for my set he will give me little to no information. Example the preacher curl machine, I couldn’t remember if he had just his elbow on the pad or his full tricep. I asked and he proceeded to say something about my shoulder. I told him that didn’t answer my question and he got annoyed and started his set for the machine next to me.
He brought me to the free weight section and anything with my a bench I get nervous that I won’t be able to do it. For reference I’m 5’7 and 110 pounds so I also feel so small next to all the muscle guys. During the exercise which I have never done before and told him I’ve never watched a video on, he proceeds to turn around and look around the gym. He said my form was “fine” after I loudly asked him again as I was very unsure.
From that exercise my neck is so so so sore. Clearly my form was wrong and I didn’t do something right. I am very frustrated with my boyfriend as I feel my slight injury is partially due to his fault.
AITAH if I buy my own gym membership and start doing the exercises I chose? I can see him getting butthurt about me no longing wanting his help. I’m taking it upon myself in my free time to start learning exercises and correct form on my own. I wish he was of more help but it looks like I might have to start going myself.
